Just recently the Syrian Army was attacking Kurds, who we are supporting, instead of ISIS or any of the "rebel" groups.
The whole area is a giant can of worms with alliances that change with the wind. You certainly can't trust anyone there except probably the Kurds.
A good place to stay out of or just support the dictator who can keep control over the population, i.e. Sadam Hussein or Assad.
The notion of "nation building" in the islamic world is a fantasy pursued by the ignorant.
