I recall seeing a program about islam on the history channel and I believe it was mentioned that Muhammad was unable to read. Anyone want to speculate as to how he was able to produce the Koran? Especially since he supposedly just brought the Koran down out of the cave or wherever he was. Do you think he had a scribe that was helping him?

Maybe I am wrong and he wasn't illiterate.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

I conducted a search and came across the following link: http://www.answering-islam.org/Index/M/muhammad.html (search for, or scroll down to the heading "Was Muhammad illiterate?")

It could be some Islamic traditions disagree with Muhammad being illiterate, but that page goes into the reasoning behind it.

krynn,

This is a pretty good article on the subject of Muhammad illiteracy:

http://www.answering-islam.org/Gilchrist/Vol1/3a.html

You might also find this one interesting coming from a Muslim website:

http://www.submission.org/illiteracy.html

There is a hadeeth that describes an incident where one of Muhammad's companions made a suggestion as to how to fix up one of the revelations from Allah. The companion made a suggestion and Muhammad liked it and incorporated it into the verse.

I personally believe that Muhammad could read and write.
