The APA: Liberal?

I've been discussing the
American Psychological Association on different board, regarding homosexuality. I made mention that I've heard from some people that the APA is considered liberal. When I mentioned that, the person I was talking to said that the APA is merely an organization that bases it conclusions on facts.
Is it true? Not true? Partially true?

I work closely with the APA in my current Master's Program.
Psychology is a soft science and it is very much affected in its conclusions by the presuppositions that a person brings to the field.
My experience is that, like a great deal of academia, it tends to be more liberal relative to the general population.
