Scripture Needs Defending?

I get a daily devotional from New Life that I find encouraging and helpful. Today's struck me for some reason when I think about my own propensity to imagine that the Bible and Truth "needs" me to defend it.

This sums up beautifully what I think I need to hear when I begin to think that way.

Letting Out the Lion

by Steve Arterburn

Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe. - John 20:27

Suppose an argument arose around the lion's cage at the zoo about how strong and ferocious the lion was. To your amazement, there were some people who doubted that he was strong or ferocious at all. Now, you could point out the lion's size, teeth, claws, hunting instinct, and history as a man-eater. Or, you could simply open the cage, whereupon the lion itself would immediately remove all doubt!

This is precisely what a great nineteenth-century preacher named Charles Spurgeon said about the Bible. Is it true? Is it authoritative? Is it able to acquaint sinners with the Savior? We can argue about it forever; or we can faithfully study the Bible, share it, and let God remove all doubt by bearing His own witness!

Friends, the Bible doesn't need defending. Loosen the lion and watch it do its own convincing!
