He took our place. He died the death of a sinner apart from God yet He was without sin. Sin was placed on Him and He paid the price for us.

We are saved, through Christ, from eternal death...separation from God.

Simple breakdown of it all:

God creates angels and Lucifer. Lucifer and some rebel. God condemns them, throws them out of heaven.

God creates human race, barely here a small time they are led astray by Lucifer - because he knows God must be consistent. And now that humankind has sinned we too must share in the same punishment - hence the phrase 'bruising the head of the serpent' - Lucifer's ego in this case.

Now there is a bit of a quandary. If God is to be consistent we must be punished the same way, but (God being the lawyer he is in some ways) God found an out for us - he never said who must be punished in this case, and since we never had a chance he came to our defense.

Instead of us dying and being punished he chose to balance the equation - he came here himself, someone without sin, to die in our place.

Jesus coming here allowed balance to be restored to the equation - Lucifer's ego was bruised, ie - he lost the war even though he won the battle.

God has self imposed limitations - he is the same today, yesterday, and tomorrow. Lucifer knew this and led us astray - whereas he himself wandered from the path. His line of thinking is that we must now suffer as well, and he felt he had won and hurt God by leading his new creation off the path.

Again, this is a simple view of it all and does not go into the theological details or even the 'physics' of Heaven, sin, etc. One might also note how we humans are able to create more of ourselves - so in order to save those born into sin God came down here to take the punishment himself.

One HUGE problem IMHO we have is that we keep seeing God as all powerful, while ignoring his limitations as he put forth.

We keep defining God - creating him in our own image. And that is why so many don't get the whole of the Bible.

Good question, you need to understand that "salvation" is by re-uniting us with God, by us receiving His Spirit within us so we can know him and have his nature!! So, he saved us from a short, shallow existance where nothing really satisfies for long, instead you have fear, confusion and death.

"he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost" (Titus 3:5)

Jesus death for our sin was to enable the Spirit to indwell us!

"Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangs on a tree:
That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith."
(Galatians 3:13-14)

If you want to receive Jesus salvation, read Acts 2v4 onwards where his disciples received it, and expect the same today.

Visit a church that is faithful to it (sadly many aren't, they blindly follow traditions of men)

Romans 5:8, 9, 10, 11, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

"9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.

"10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

"11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation." NASB

These verses pretty much cover it.

One thing the cross experience does is that it transcends time in exposing human nature as sinful in how Jesus was treated. It exposes what human beings think of God and what they do to the innocent. For this, we who believe as Jesus taught are saved from God's wrath through what Christ accomplished on the cross and by the resurrection.

We are reconciled back to God and brought back into fellowship with God and thus God's word comes to fruition (Genesis 1:26-27 and Revelation 21:1, 2, 3, 4, 5 )
