Maybe this should be in the humor forum, since I was thinking this could (should) be a place to have fun writing fun little poems. Great stress reliever without having to buy a book, magazine, or paper!

To write a Haiku, a crude Haiku (Japanese Haiku are somewhat different since the language's "syllables" are not the same), just write a little non-rhyming poem of three lines with the following syllable pattern: 5 - 7 - 5.

Does the atheist
brain beat to a different
drum, heart arrested?

( :P getting a little quick practice in at some people's expense . . . sorry! Just musing! "Heart" here is a heart for God.)

A Cinquain is similar, that it follows a syllable count, but it is longer. It should convey a single thought, but not be a list. The syllable count is: 2, 4, 6, 8, 2. You can break the rules a bit - it's OK. y:p My example has too many syllables in the first line, but that's OK. Just have fun.

Zakery
controls zombies,
scatters them with bombs, guns,
sings of donuts as bodies fly;
my son.

These are just some examples of short poems you can do. Feel free to write in other styles, and I'll probably post more later about some other short styles. Any of you can do that too, of course!

I can give you a limerick...

There once was a man from Peru
Who dreamed he was eating a shoe
He awoke in the night
in a terrible fright
And found it was perfectly true...

I'd have to think more on the cinquains and haiku...

=D Limericks, neat! I'd love to do some of those too - thanks! . . . I don't remember ever waking up doing something I was dreaming of. Do you? I used to sleep walk a lot, and talk in my sleep, but I never remembered any of it.

One my friend told me.

Here we are for your final farewell
For your journey to Heaven or Hell
But we won't keep you long
Just a prayer and a song
Cos we think you're beginning to smell

That is really wild, Zoe, lol. (And thanks SBB, but I don't want people to think this is "my" thread--it's everyone's--I simply started it.) I thought I'd give a little instructional info on the Limerick poem too, since I gave some for the Haiku and Cinquain.

Limericks are five lines, with three lines longer than the other two: 1, 2, and 5 are longer than lines 3 and 4. The longer lines have three poetical "feet" (stressed syllables), the shorter have two. The end words of lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme. Without getting technical :) , the syllable stress of a limerick like this:

da da DA da da DA da da DA (some start out with one unstressed vowel, not two)
da da DA da da DA da da DA
da da DA da da DA
da da DA da da DA
da da DA da da DA da da DA

The instructional poetry book I have here includes a limerick by the author's daughter (I strongly assume), Emma Janeczko:

There once was a poodle named Rose
Who liked to dance on her toes.
She twirled and she spun,
Had barrels of fun,
Until she fell on her nose.

There once was a boy named Zak
An appetite he never did lack
He ate and he ate
always cleaning his plate,
and donuts he'd simply attack.

(Zak said he didn't mind if I put this up. He has a thing for donuts.)

I eat my peas with honey
I've done it all my life
it does taste kind of funny
but it keeps them on the knife!!

And...

Fuzzy wuzzy was a bear
fuzzy wuzzy had no hair
fuzzy wuzzy wasn't very fuzzy, was he?

Lol.

My body lies over the ocean,
My body lies over the sea,
I'm no good at astral-projection,
so bring back my body to me.

Well I am not sure if this would be okay. But I do want to post a song I like a lot, and songs are poetry! It's called "Nothing can be Explained" and it is in my sig! Here are the lyrics!

Lost on the way, no one to blame, no one to say,
nothing to do with the way everything's changed

So I feel a little like a child who's lost, a little like,
(everything's changed) a lot, I didn't like all of the pain,

I'm confused, a lot of it, is hard to take, and 'cause of it,
everything's changed, I thought I'd make it through the pain

everything's changed

Given the change I woud happily dance on the grave of the one
who shows no remorse

So I feel little like, a child who's lost, a little like,
(everything's changed) a lot, I didn't like all of the pain,
I'm confused, a lot of it, is hard to take, and cause of it,
everything's changed I thought I'd make it through the pain
everything's changed

nothing is plain
nothing can be explained, nothing

Given the change I woud happily laugh,
and be free to express what I feel
Given the change I could hold up my head and smile again

It is weird... but I like it, lol then again I am weird!

I made a poem about an old Mac game I used to play on an emulator.

A player runs down corridoors
of polygons and bricks;
to go a thousand miles round,
and flip an idle
switch.
