Folks, please offer your prayers for Hitchens...that he may find comfort and healing, and also that this turns out to be the life-changing event that we hope for for all people.
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) — British-born author Christopher Hitchens on Wednesday cut short a book tour to undergo chemotherapy, which several media outlets reported was because the heavy smoker has been diagnosed with cancer.
"I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus. This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice," Hitchens, 61, said in a statement released through his publishers Twelve.

Nice post John..
Even though he opposes us.. Prayers are up for him. Or any atheist for that matter...
Christ's message is always one of love and not hate.

I split the topic (first time I did that!) and placed it under "Purpose of prayer" in the Questions for Christians in the link above.
I agree that it was weird in the prayer forum

I offer Christopher and his family - in particular Peter, with whom I am somewhat aqauinted - my prayers and best wishes during this trying time. I disagree with your views, Christopher, but I also know that you have a well-intentioned heart. Be well, and be safe.

Good idea
it's been a while ago i got a bit concerned about him and people like him, really... they're strong, persuasive atheists who won't give up and don't even try the possibility of any deity at all.
Only God can help him, but I know there've been cases when someone (e.g. a preacher) came and prayed for the person and he instantly got better. there's been cases healed of cancer, alcoholism, tobacco addiction etc. And many of these happened THE MOMENT the person accepted Jesus as their Savior, recognized his sinfulness, placed faith in Him etc. So I wonder, that perhaps, if all other means fail, Hitchens would be so desperate and "give in"? I sincerely believe that if he did try praying to God He'd hear him and within several days/weeks he'd get better. Only if... these people had the will to at least accept the possibility of a God and stop being so anti-religious and ignorant of any spiritual things.
There've also been cases where someone ELSE (a believer) prayed for the sick and they got better. whether the sick was a believer not 100% sure but I think in this case they were.
Well, perhaps sounds as it does, but really, maybe sending a bunch of "Christ's ministers" (is that the right term?
) over such people and allowing them to pray over the sick would do the job...
And we'll keep on praying... In addition, let's imagine what impact would that have. Let's imagine an anti-theist or strong atheist e.g. Hitchens, Dawkins, Dennett etc. turning around. Can we imagine the impact? Perhaps those whose ideas and faith (or lack thereof) have been influenced by them would now have to change their hearts... people who have had such a significant impact may have an even greater impact when they become believers in Christ...
May God change their hearts for the good of the world and His glory!

I like Christopher.
Of all the militant atheists out there he is the most likeable, probably because he doesn't cover his atheism with a fake layer of intellectual superiority or "science", he just says he doesn't like religion because it can cause people to do bad things in his opinion AND because he wants to live his life without a "god looking over him".
He states his personal opinion and never makes it out to be any more than just that.
Sure he can be smug and arrogant at times, but that sells people !
LOL !
From what I gather from people who met him and even from the writings of those that debated him, he is a great guy, great sense of humour that just doesn't believe in God.
I hope he gets well and yes, part of me hopes that God gets through to Him, but you know what?
What happens, happens.

Well he has passed away. I hope he made his peace before he did, but I did not see anything like that reported.

Or if he did, do you really think "his people" would want that broadcast?

O heck no. His body wasn't even cold when they starting turning him into an atheist martyr or saint. When will they understand that we don't care about public relations victories? It doesn't matter if we never know if he converted or not, all that matters is whether he did.
If he did not, then we are genuinely sad for him.

Well said, well said.
