I was reading some old posts, and was impressed with a lot of what Mastermind said. What happened to him?

Maybe one of the other mods know, but he was before my time. You could try pming him.

Just left. I guess discussing theological issue became less pressing in his life.

It is quite common. The amount of core posters who end up moving on including moderators. There have been quite a few. I almost did, but continued to stay on... even if I go through dry periods.
