The short answer is yes, they are scams.
The long answer is, first how dare you mention nuclear, don't you know that nuclear is eeeeeeevil? Nuclear is never mentioned as an alternative, ignore the fact that it is safe, clean, abundanct, and we have the technology for it now. Ignore the fact that we can even make breeder reactors and triple the amount of feul. Ignore the fact that there even is such a thing called thorium reactors, which is even more abundant (and even safer, if possible) and also allows us to breed U233. Ignore the fact the chernobyl was a fluke, wasn't deadly to a huge swath of population, and used a type of reactor never used in the west since western physisists refused to even think about making them, since they knew what might happen. Ignore the fact that "three mile island" was pretty much the worst possible thing that could happen to a western style reactor, and released such a huge amount of radiation that just outside the plant the amount was about equel to 30 days of plain ol' standing around and being hit by cosmic rays (in other words, negligable). Ignore the fact that it is possible to take nuclear waste, encase it in a big glass brick, and drop it into the ocean at the point where the crust of the earth is folding under, and not only cannot the wastes excape from the glass, but they will be swollowed by the earth, never to be seen again. So, your not going to mention nuclear again, are you? You bad, bad person!
And you did it agian, you mentioned hydrolelectric! Man, you are really BAD! Don't you know rivers want to be free? Ignore the fact that rivers are not sentient. Ignore the fact that this free river idea is why legal actions were taken over and over andoverandoverandover against the US Corps of Engineers to prevent them from strengthening the levees protecting New Orleans, with the result we now know. Ignore the fact that hydrolectric produces no pollutiuon of any kind, and really is renewable. Ignore the fact that the same people who preach "renwable" are also doing everything they can to tear down hydrolelectric dams.
Also, we need to protest coal fired power plants, but remember, we are not to even MENTION that the majority of coal plants, dirty ones, are being made in China. China is a nice saftly socialist country, say nothing bad about it. Ignore the fact that expensive power here is shunting jobs to China, where they use coal to supply the power to make the things we still need. Ignore the fact that "cap and trade" is causing jobs to flee anywhere that even threatens to implement it, and causing massive unemplyment as we speak since no one wants to hire anyone with that sort of threat hanging over their company (that and obamacare).
Now, alternative, in electricity, is only supposed to mean solar, and especially wind. Why? because they don't work, thats why! We don't want anything that produces lots of cheap, clean energy! Why, that would mean people would be able to do all kinds of production of stuff, and we all know that is "industrialization", which means those evil corporations, which is capitalism, which is bad. We need to get away from people producing anything they want, and get to where they only produce where and when and what "their betters", the new nobles, the ones who have gone to all the right schools (where they learn important stuff like "french narrative theory") and hang out with the right crowd, tell them they may produce. We need to stop this horrible idea that someone, somewhere, is doing something without our permission!
We like wind because it can be made into nice picturesque posters, which leave out the horrible noise, and the millions of dead birds. Nice posters that leave out the fact that Norway has enough windmills to generate 19% of it's electricity, but can only actually use 3% of it, since the wind stubbornly refuses to blow when we need the electricity, resulting in the remeinder of Norways electricity fom windmills being sold to other countries at a loss. Then there is that fact that wind and solar both come at much higher costs then any other type of power, and thus need constant government subsidies (thats tax money, taken from you) to even stay in business, resulting eventually in the government running out of money and the wind and solar companies go out of business (happening now in various places). And of course we do NOT want space based solar power, which produces 5 times the power of surface based, and then beams it to earth based antennas in the desert as microwaves, because even though the area is barren, we are sure that something bad might happen somehow and to something, in fact, we have blocked even tests of it. We certainly don't even want that mentioned, unlimited amounts of clean energy, no way!
And never mention how corn to feul results in less food being grown, resulting in America no longer being the breadbasket of the world (result, people starving). Ignore the fact that it has been shown that fertalizer, tractors, shipping, and processing and the like show that ethanol production actually uses more petroleum than it saves. Ignore the fact that we have huge reserves of coal, and as far back as world war two America bombed the german synthetic feul plants making feul from coal, as well as from air (which you can do with enough power, such as say from space beamed solar). We are much more backward and primative then they were 65 years ago in the advanced country of germany, and have forgotten all that stuff.
You are NEVER to mention that Spain, the country that went big on "green" technology, sees two or more jobs lost for every one "green" job created! You are not to mention that they are having to cut back on those ideas due to a now bad economy, resulting in a loss of "green" jobs. You are never to mention that huge amounts of money, mullions and millions, that get spent to make a few green jobs. You are not to mention that some of the companies that Obama touted in the new green economy are going out of buziness, or have already folded.
And keep that money coming for 'alternative feuls", making sure to not actually find any, because if you do, the money will stop. Plus, it makes for some wonderfull scams, which people are currently running, claiming to use 'alternative feuls" which are usually just regular feuls with an additive or two, free money from the government! Hydrogen is good, because we cannot store it and use it. Ignore the fact that actually we can, storing it inside another substance, a little heat and it comes out, we have managed to get the government to block that company from access to the stuff they need to actually make it (or to adopt many kinds of current cars to actually run on hydrogen without much modification). We only want cars, like electric, that are expensive, so that they need government subsidies to be viable at all, thus putting them under the governments thumb, you know, under the controll of the people who "really matter", their betters, the "right" people.
An do NOT ever lsiten to anyone who has not published "peer reviewd" papers claiming to support alternative feuls or "Global Warming" (name now changed to "Global Climate Change", oh wait, that's been changed to "Global Climate Disruption", a nice vague idea that should fit just about any weather or climate). We have carefully selected the "peers" to only allow in reviews of approved ideas, nothing is allowed to be "peer reviewed" without our say so, those that allow publication of non approved ideas are ousted, blackballed, labled "deniers".
