Why do Christians oppose the teaching of evolution so much? It does not deny god, or directly teach against the bible, why does evolution meet with such intense opposition. Most Jews, and a majority of Christians have accepted evolution as it can be easily fitted to the bible, but yet a very vocal minority seems incredibly opposed to even the mention of it.

It's not all Christians who oppose it. It's most common in the US. The opposition is nowhere near the level in Europe and other places.

There's two primary things that drive it. The Fundamentalist, Literalistic hermeneutic cannot accept any level of metaphor within the creation account because to accept it there is to them the start of a slippery slope of rejecting everything else that that method of interpretation is relied upon in terms of their world view and understanding of Scripture.

Second, scientific evolution and natural selection, historically provided answers to questions that in the past were attributed as evidence of the need of God within people's world views. Evolution has expanded beyond simple physical science and for many it's become a platform for philosophical world views that either exclude God or actively oppose the existence of God. Many Christians cannot differentiate between what is hard science and what is philosophy and so everything "evolution" is bundled together and rejected collectively.

The Majority of people who self-identify as Christian in fact are not opposed to evolution in all contexts. Many creationists Old and Young, actually accept evolution to the extent it is shown scientifically to exist (microevolution) but not on the broader less scientifically demonstrated level of abiogenesis or development from single cell to multi-celled plants and creatures etc. In fact, ironically there are some Young Earth Creationists who actually believe in some forms of evolution on a more accelerated basis than ever observed as part of their belief of how the earth repopulated with it's current diversity after the Noaic Flood.

Christians really don't oppose evolutionary teaching.. What many people oppose however is what evolution can and cannot do.. A lot of this touches on micro and macro evolution where there are various distinctions especially around the topic of organic evolution.

Much of this is expounded in public schools where evolutionary thought claims it doesn't intrude in the existence of God. However, if one can claim that chance is the catalyst behind creation, then who really needs God anyway? Therefore it isn't the belief in evolution itself but how it is being presented which most certainly will involve some philosophy at some point. This is not science...
