John 9:41

It reads:
Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains

My question is whether what Jesus said is also aplicable at present times. There are people who do not know what the truth is and they say that they do not know, do not see. I have on my mind weak agnostics mostly. So, according to the above verse, do they have sin or not? What is the meaning of the above verse really?

Would someone be judged for ignorance?

In this case the specific audience was the religious authority who had SEEN the miracles, specifically the blind man. They were willfully blind, rejecting what was clearly visible to them. They were judged for willingly rejecting the Messiah. Of course that still applies today.

Add to Jlay's comment place Romans 1:16-25 as well too...

Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Rom 1:17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith."
Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Rom 1:19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
Rom 1:20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Rom 1:21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Rom 1:22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Rom 1:24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,
Rom 1:25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding you question?

Are you asking if agnostics will be judged the same as a un-contacted amazon tribe? The answer to that is no.

Agnostics have an ability to know the truth, but they turn their backs to it, they CAN see the truth, but they CHOOSE not to.

So, blind people nowadays are those who never heard of the gospel? What about people who admit that they are blind, that they do not know what the truth is. If these people have read the gospel they are without excuse? Let's suppose people who do not claim that they are wise. (Rom 1:22) People like Socrates. Knowing that they do not know anything. They did not exchange the truth for the lie (Rom 1:25) they just simply do not know what the truth is and they do not claim that the truth is this or that. They do not say: 'We see.' So, if these people read the Gospel do they then know God? (Rom 1:21) And if they do not honor him and give thanks to him they will go to hell, right?
Perhaps, those people are on a good way to become Christians. What my problem is what would happen with them if they die before they become Christians.

Only god knows what for sure will happen to them...

But again, they have the opportunity to know the bible, and let's face it, they've had plenty of time. The reason why most agnostics do not look more into Christianity is because you have have to give up all you old ungodly desires and reform your life ( 1 Peter 1:14 NIV , Colossians 3:6-12 NIV )

Think of it this way, If a man walked up to you and said plow my yard and I will give you $5,000, and you said no, thinking that your life is great as it is, why do hard work just to receive a reward that you do not think much of. Then 1 month later things go bad you need $5,000 to live off of. Now who's fault is it that you refused when you had the chance?

Your life was so good and you did not want to change it, then you die, and you need the reward now but you have already chosen in the life that god gave you to ignore the calling. Sounds like you will have a lot to explain in front of the lord.

Anybody living in a civilized society at this day and age truly has the ability, if he wants to, to find god. Most choose not to due to the social influences, the hard work it takes, how "perfect" you life is already. None of these are excuses however, they are just pathetic faults in reasoning.
