Simple Question i asked my daughter and was surprized they do actually tell them things at school like Jesus was born who was our savior but of course her first answer was Father xmas and presents.

Jesus as savior taught in school? You must be American!jezzer wrote:[What does Christmas mean to you?] i asked my daughter and was surprized they do actually tell them things at school like Jesus was born who was our savior
To me Christmas is a Royal Annoyance. I wish it were January 7th already.

Are you talking about real royalty or are you just using the adjective as meaning the same as tedious in general? Either way, why is it an annoyance to you?Furstentum Liechtenstein wrote:Jesus as savior taught in school? Re: What does Christmas mean to you?
I dislike the fact that Christmas has become secularized, and that it's started to celebrate "values" that have no connections with Christianity whatsoever. This capitalist Christmas encourages people to spend money not necessarily on things they need, but to spend just for the sake of spending, or to brag to your neighbours that you spent more money than them. When I was younger (i.e. a child), I used to enjoy the atmosphere, the "magic", the presents and all that stuff, but as I grow older I'm becoming more and more tired and annoyed with the entire routine. Why:
- the same commercials (buy, buy, buy!) start to bombard us as early as in mid-November,
- then we have those kids who throw firecrackers around (that get stronger and louder every year),
- then those annoying Christmas songs that have nothing to do with Christmas (wishes to "Santa Claus" and similar nonsense),
- then decorating pine trees (if it's called that way in English, anyway I don't have a reason why I would keep a greasy tree full of pine needles in my home),
- then buying presents (like I can't buy gifts to people I care for whenever I want, at least it seems more spontaneous to me)
- then this aforementioned "Santa Claus" nonsense, I'm definitely not going to sell that delusion to my children - when they get a present, I'd want them to know that it's from their parents, rather than some invented figure, besides when they realize it's invented, what if they start asking questions about whether God was invented as well...? Dangerous, and I'm definitely going to avoid that.
What do I like about Christmas? I like to use my Christmas break at college to spend some time with my family, I like to get together with my friends who live far away and come home for the holidays, I like to go to the church and renew myself spiritually, and of course I like a good Christmas lunch. As simple as that.

Re: What does Christmas mean to you?
I wish Christmas was a completely religious holiday. You don't see many secular/atheist families celebrating Hanukkah. I don't mind the exchanging of gifts as long as everyone doesn't lose sight of what we are exchanging gifts in celebration of.
I like seeing family, especially when the little ones open their gifts. I love candle light service, although we go to a service for 4 different family members at 4 different churches. I'm pretty burnt out on church by the end of the night

Re: What does Christmas mean to you?
I love Christmas. For family reasons (we do give lots of presents to each other and enjoy each other's company) and of course what it represents. Granted secular people want to "get in on it" too, but I know what it means to me and many other believers.
Another nice thing is that in the past few years there's been some absolutely ridiculous controversy (not being able to say "happy Christmas", actually Christ-related Christmas references being the center of controversies right and left), about 5 years ago it was just awful. Its really been dying down quite a bit in recent years, I'm sure there's been some sort of controversy this year but I haven't heard a thing about it myself. Makes it all more relaxing not to have to worry about arguing about such stupidity.

Family, friends and feasting, helped along by most people being off work brightens up the winter. New Year being the following week doesn't hurt much either.

Re: What does Christmas mean to you?
Christmas is:
A wonderful Life
Miracle on 34th street
A Christmas carol
Scrooged
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, LOL !
In short, Christmas is a time when we remember how blessed we are, we remember those less fortunate than us ( and do something about it hopefully), that we realize that we are NOT entitled to what we have but gives thanks that we have it.
Christmas is a time we rejoice that Christ was Born, the Lord and Saviour to ALL that accept him as such.
I couldn't care less how secular or how commercial Christmas is for some, it is NOT that way for me and my family.
It is a time of love, joy and compassion.

Re: What does Christmas mean to you?
This Christmas is going to be special for me.
My daughter is scheduled on the last week to be born. My wife and I decided to name her Alexandra, and her middle name will be Genesis. Can't wait! Sleep deprivation here I come!

That's a beautiful name Dom, let us know when the blessed event happens.domokunrox wrote:This Christmas is going to be special for me.

Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.
Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Alexandra is a lovely name, Dom. Gratsies. Although Genesis for a middle name is a strange one...domokunrox wrote:This Christmas is going to be special for me.
