I don't think most scientists are necessarily materialists; but rather those in positions of power, in charge of, who fund, and dish out the funds, to scientists are.
Dissent can cost you not only funding, but close many doors in the field, and even leave those with a job unemployed.
It's a war in many respects; with pressure groups, watch dogs and 'enforcers' all keeping a careful eye out to ensure no one shifts from the party line.

Discussions that take place behind closed doors from "secular scientists" is another matter.
