Praying for something to happen

Can praying for something to happen cause something to happen that otherwise would not?
If God always knows what we are going to pray for before we do so and what he will do about it can it still cause something to happen that otherwise would not?
How many words will be spent in this thread questioning and/or discussing the meaning of "cause something to happen that otherwise would not?"
