The Second Coming

In in the years soon after Jesus's ascension did Christtians think the Second Coming would happen in the next 50 to 75 years? If so, did this change by 200 A.D., or when?

Does belief in the Second Coming allow for intellegent life in other galaxies? When the Second Coming happens, what happens to them?

What's with all these questions? Why don't you read your Bible and find out for yourself? You would learn far more if you did.

FL. This is a forum. A place for questions and discussions. Seems an obvious point to make.

Of course, you are right. Why didn't you answer Ultimate's questions?

Though I'm far from best qualified to answer your question, I can offer a fairly concise answer. I've heard Mathew 24 often referenced where Jesus says this generation will not pass before He returns. I've heard people say Jesus was supposed to return to save that generation from the Romans, therefore it's just fantasy; but if you read the passages, He says much more than that before and after that verse. He says in those times will be filled with wars, famines, disasters, and people in general (other than those still waiting for Him and salvation) will have turned to being sinful and hedonistic. Sometime after that, but no man knows the exact time. So when I hear people say the time is near, I shy away because people have been saying that for almost 2000 years. I think the real message is to live like He is returning in the next moment because for all you know, that's when it might happen.

Don't be flippant. Whether I choose to answer a question is up to me what I don't appreciate is people having a go at someone asking a genuine question and a good question. That does not sound like a loving Christian thing to do.

I’m sorry about my last post; I hadn’t finished it and realize what I did post is poorly worded and makes no sense. So I’ll try again…
I've heard Matthew 24:34 referenced where Jesus says this generation will not pass before certain events take place including His return. I've heard claims that Jesus really meant He would return to liberate that same generation from the Romans. Then the logic goes, since He didn’t do so, the scripture must be fiction or fantasy. But if you read the passages before and after, He says much more than that before and after that verse. He says in the times before He returns, there will be all kinds of strife and signs; wars, famines, disasters, and people in general (other than those still waiting for Him and salvation) will have become complacent. Sometime after that, but no man knows the exact time, He will return.
So when I hear people say the time is near, I shy away because people have been saying that for almost 2000 years. I think the real message is to live like He is returning in the next moment because for all anyone knows, that's when it might happen. Jesus discusses His return in Mathew 24 & 25, and it’s referred to in other Gospels and NT books.
With that said, there is still the question of what Jesus meant when He referenced returning before this generation passes in Matthew 24:34. From the bit of research I’ve done, it looks like it’s complicated. Maybe one of our more knowledgeable members could help with that.

I wasn't being flippant. I was being laconic. You may want to look into Ultimate's history of asking strange questions before you judge me as flippant.

Now, cnk12 gave a good answer to one part of Ultimate's post.

Fair enough but this time it was actually a good question and there are more articulate people out there to answer it than me.

What qualifies you to decide what is strange?

before you judge me as flippant.

Who are you to judge me or my questions? Maybe I think you are a cyberbully. If I did, would I be wrong?

Whether I do or not, you will decide.

Ultimate,

You really should start reading the Bible to learn what it says for yourself. Why not try a paraphrase like The Living Bible or The Message. The Good News Bible is pleasant to read as well.

It may seem that some thought that the second coming would be in their lifetime.
Wishful thinking and all that.
The Christ made it clear that the time was unknown ( even to Him at that time) and that people should not focus on it ( As per the first verses in ACTS), didn't stop people from WANTING and HOPING for it to be sooner.
And we all know how desire can cloud how we see and hear and understand things.
