Did Jesus have long hair?

Every time I see a drawing of Jesus, he has long hair and a beard. Even the Shroud of Turin has him with long hair. Yet Paul in one of his letters stated that it is a shame for a man to have long hair. Why would he say this if the God he worshipped had long hair? Do you suppose this is an oversight by all those artists who drew Jesus?

Ken this was talked about on the Shroud thread a while back. Remember that when Paul was talking about this he was specifically speaking to the corinthians (Greeks) who wore their hair extra extra long and even adorned their hair with decorations like women do which made it very hard to differentiate between them and women.
If you wanna see how a typical rabbi wore his hair just look at the ultra orthodox rabbis of today and you will see the side locks the medium long hair and the beard, and thsi style hasnt really changed much over the last 2000 years.
DRDS punctuated this point but in a very humorous way saying that it wasnt realistic for Christ or any Jew back in 1st century jerusalem to have a Chuck Norris Army haircut

So do you suppose he meant that it was a shame for a man to style, or pattern his hair like that of a woman?

Maybe for those particular men in Greece due to the culture at the time, you have to remember that Paul wrote letters to specific people at specific times for specific purposes for specific situations, we don't always have all the facts concerning these instances.

Thankyou. Would it be fair to say that much of what is written in the Bible does not apply to us today, but was written specifically to people of those times? Such as the letters of Paul?

I wouldn't say that at all, we can learn lessons from every verse in every book of the Bible whether is was written to all people of all times or not.

If it became tough to tell the difference between them. I think that was the point Paul was making Ken.
This has become a very informative thread .
Ken you really pick up on the details well

I can understand learning from the bible, that's now what I'm asking. I'm asking do you apply everything in the bible to your life? Or do you assume some stuff is written for specific people and is only meant to be applied to them. In other words; is there a lot of stuff in the Bible like this letter Paul wrote that is not meant to be applied to modern man

This is the thing, it does apply to us, it applies in the lesson we learn from it, maybe not quite literal application but an application nevertheless. If there was no lesson or application to be learn't it would not have been included in the biblical canon.

Correct Kenny, I totally agree with Daniel's answer.

I am not sure of the exact reason why Paul gave this instruction or advice, so I can't really comment, but I can make a guess. Maybe he was warning them not to cause a stir, that they would draw bad attention to themselves and others, because as Christians we should conduct ourselves ( if we can avoid it) in a way that doesn't incite violence and possibly endangering other peoples lives. Obviously this would apply to us also.
As for applying it to Jesus, he never incited violence if he could help it, obviously he died a violent death and was very angry when he tipped tables in the temple but I guess he couldn't avoid those situations and he would know if he could, because after all he is God.

Long is a relative word. We have to know what the accepted normal length was before we can guess what long was.

If the goal was not to incite violence, it probably wouldn't apply to us today because today long hair isn't enough to incite violence; what do you think?

So are you saying his words are meaningless because he didn't specify how many inches long hair must be to be considered long
