The Vatican Observatory is one of the largest and most advanced observatories in the world dedicated to astronomical research and education.

Stating that the RCC is or ever was against scientific advancement is one of the most ignorant statements a person can make.

One of the main guys at the :::gasp::: discovery institute jay richards is catholic and a :::gasp::: intelligent design advocate

Didn't they force people to believe the earth was flat for a long period?

No, but i'm sure you could find an article that claimed that.
I would do some further reading into the Galileo trial.

There's a few fascinating book that are very fluent reads about it. "The Trial Of Galileo" is an excellently researched one that I, personally loved. Big myth killer.
