The article does not sound like debates on our forum but rather like debates on facebook.

And Nessa, I noticed the joke in pictures.
If you are afraid of intelectual debates, look at my questions to B.W. in Bible study thread.
I am not afraid of B.W. nor of other intellectuals here. As B.W. said, longing heart to learn is enough. (Loosly remembering his words now)

Nah. I have plenty of fears but fear of intellectual debates is not one of them :ewink:

I just put up the joke because it's funny.

We all tend to think we are smarter than what we really are sooner or later.

As far as the article relating to this forum goes - I think it does.

Not all debates are formal and there are some informal debates going on in some of these threads for sure.

I think the article relates well.

sample taken from article..
I've been involved in dozens of internet debates.  By this I mean I've had discussions with people I do and don't know online.  I'm not talking about an agreed-upon format and timed debate, but instead impromptu debates over a range of topics.

I completely disagree with the article AND with what has been said here, even though I haven't read the article or any posts.

From the article
First, know that most people won't change their mind. People like proving they are right and typically in the medium of Facebook or comments on a news article on a news site, they get on the defensive.
Well, on this board we are ready to be corrected, to change mind, to learn more, get closer to the truth and not only to prove we are right.
Is that correct?

The author is not saying anything against learning.

No, not everyone here is ready to be corrected and setting out to just change someones mind because you think you have the better argument has its drawbacks when it comes to conversations with atheists etc Even lennox says he doesnt go into that mentality of changing minds in debates

The article points out positive aspects of discussion such as planting seeds. That is what I see happening here. Getting people to see things from another
perspective. Only God can change minds and hearts when it comes to some issues such as salvation and not just persasive argements. Though of course persasive arguements have their place.

I wasnt saying you can take the whole article and make it apply to every single aspect here at this forum. Just that there were good points in it that do apply. Obviously the article wasnt written for our forum and is not going to be a blanket application.

I had in mind the debates between atheists and christians when I read the article.

As article states there are many pros for the debates. Debates you select wisely. ;)
So I agree.
