DNA testing

I was thinking of getting a DNA test done. I'm curious about my heritage. But I've read that the tests are only accurate with one's heritage from 500-1000 years ago.
Anyone have any experience with this kind of DNA test? Any feedback you'd like to share?
From what I know about my heritage, from speaking with family, my ancestors were primarily Scottish, English, German, and Swedish. I'd like to see if I'd find out anything more.

I doubt I'm Slovak. I'm not smart enough to be Slobovian.

I only had an older picture ...
My uncle was a Monkey who stole banana's with Dave from the grocery store when they were wee little tikes, he gave me the picture of Dave.
Uncles name was Darwin...
