If God created the universe, why did He place the Sun a little too close to Earth?

Something that has always bothered me. The Sun is our lifeline - it is essential for pretty much anything humanity and the rest of life needs to survive. However, the main issue with the sun is that it is blindingly bright. We cannot look at the sun without suffering irreparable damage to our eyes. Is there a reason for this? What purpose does having a sun damage people's eyesight serve?
