Do You Believe This Is One of the Most Banned Books?

According to the Blog site of God's not dead 2.
Which book is banned most in America these days? Some noxious pornography? A dangerous how-to? Perhaps something so hateful that librarians can’t bear to have it on their shelves – such as Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf?

No, according to the American Library Association’s latest “State of America’s Libraries” report, The Holy Bible was ranked as the sixth most challenged book in America.

What’s alarming is that this is the first time the Scriptures have made the annual ALA top-10 list. But, it is increasingly common for librarians to have to defend keeping the Bible on their shelves – against the protests of militant atheists, over-reaching bureaucrats and the politically correct anxious not to offend.

“The top 10 most challenged books for 2015 includes an entry that may seem unlikely for the United States, which is home to more Christians than any other country in the world,” reports Carol Kuruvilla, associate religion editor for the Huffington Post.

The library association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom has been collecting data about books that have either been challenged or banned from American schools or libraries since 1990. James LaRue, OIF’s director, told Kuruvilla that the Bible pops up regularly on the organization’s annual challenged books list, but that it has never before ended up in the top 10.

According to the ALA site, the bible is in the 6th placed of the frequently challenged books
Ryan Cragun, a sociologist at The University of Tampa, shrugged off the Bible’s appearance on the top 10 list. He suggested that the “privileging of religion in American society” could be the problem. What does that mean? That Christians have enjoyed privileges that now should be denied them?

"Banned" seems like a misrepresentation.

Just because people want the bible to be banned, that doesn't mean it's actually being banned.

From the link:
A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others.

I can't claim to be a Google master, but I haven't been able to find a single example of the Bible being banned in the United States, so right off the bat this article is extremely misleading. No, the Bible is not one of the most banned books in the United States. In fact, it's one book that's never banned.

As far as the challenges being a big deal, how could we possibly know? We have no information. Are challenges common? How many challenges does it take to get to number six on the list? Are challenges to the Bible taken seriously?

Anyway, here's some speculation. Glancing at the ALA statistics page it looks like there were maybe 10,000-11,000 reported challenges from 1990 through 2009. That seems like a lot until you zoom out a bit. The ACA also says that 85% of challenges go unreported, so the real total is what, 90,000 or so? According to the same ACA website almost all of those challenges take place at schools and public libraries, of which there's a combined total of about 110,000. So basically in a 20 year period about 80% of schools and public libraries had something challenged. That's an average of about 4,500 challenges per year divided among all of the schools and public libraries in the nation. The next questions would be how many books got challenged (no idea) and how were those challenges distributed (no idea). So the Bible came in 6th place on a list of who knows how many books and was challenged a total of who knows how many times. If we go with the 4,500/year number then the absolute most challenges the Bible could possibly have received is about 740 (assuming that only 10 books were challenged and that #7-#10 were only challenged once each).

Zooming back in, it seems like the Bible was challenged, at most, about 740 times. That means that in 2015 about 0.00671% of the public schools and libraries in the nation were challenged over the Bible. Or to look at it another way, in 2015 about 0.000002467% of Americans saw fit to challenge the presence of the Bible in their school or library. That's a big deal?

I'm also going to go out on a limb and say that in every one of those instances the challenger lost because a) there's nothing inherently wrong with having a Bible in a public or school library (or even in a classroom) so the challenge has no merit, and b) FOX, the Blaze, and all the rest would have gone absolutely bonkers over a successful challenge so I'd have heard about it.

It was banned once upon a time though, if I recall.
Not sure if they had libraries then.
