Take away Tim's weirdness and ridiculous effeminate posturings, and I can see Roy Orbison doing this tune in a very similar falsetto. Tim was a marketing genius - as being solidly heterosexual, he ramped up his silly homosexual posturing and weirdness as it brought huge interest and fame. He was not only in on the joke, HE was the master of it. And he laughed all the way to the bank. People don't realize that he was a musicologist who had an encyclopedic knowledge of early 20th-century popular and folk music. Without his campy vaudeville freako stylings, no one would ever have known who he was.
