Re: Belief and IQ
All one need do is read a Who's Who of the scientific age's key founding and continuing fathers to realize that their insatiable curiosity and intellect driving so many of them were wrapped up in their intelligence and belief in a God of order and precision. Scientific analysis works - not because universal randomness and unpredictability, but because of the incredible consistency of how things work - independently, interactively, and collectively - as per the consistency of the laws which all things must obey, being the foundation upon which makes doing science possible. Laws, by the way, don't create themselves, and nor are they "things" - they are observations of the parameters and specifics of how they operate over time.

Re: Belief and IQ
Correct, we don't "invent" laws or these facts, they are revealed to us via the scientific process.
1+1 = 2 and water freezes at 0 Celsius NOT because we invented that but because they do and would do this and mean this even if there are no humans around to observe them.

Thankfully, bad grammar isn't necessarily an indication of a low IQ!PaulS wrote:

Who really cares? So called 'intelligent' people can do and say some of the most stupid things.
And children can have some of the most profound wisdom. Without God, intelligence is meaningless as with everything else

Re: Belief and IQ
People with low IQ's tend to have more faith in things, like children do. However, the simple can also understand things better than geniuses and smart people. However, the reverse is true too. As Nessa was saying, does it really matter? What should matter is if their message is correct.

Re: Belief and IQ
One thing is true, men are much smarter than women. Brunettes smarter than blondes. Aussies smarter than Kiwis. Well, maybe not entirely the second since I was blonde as a kid. With the first, my daughter might be an exception, she's quite smart but maybe that will change as she transitions into a woman. The last I think can be broadly applied though.

This is what happens when we become overly reliant on spellcheck.RickD wrote:Thankfully, bad grammar isn't necessarily an indication of a low IQ!PaulS wrote:

Re: Belief and IQ
As someone once said, somewhere:
This is most evident when you consider the poverty of the new atheism’s “error theory”, which is needed to explain why, if atheism is indeed the view evidence and reason demands, so many very bright people are still religious. The usual answers given to this are not good enough. They tend to stress psychological blind-spots and wishful thinking. For instance, Dawkins says “the meme for blind faith secures its own perpetuation by the simple unconscious expedient of discouraging rational inquiry.”
But if very intelligent people are so easily led astray by such things, then shouldn’t the new atheists themselves be more sceptical about the role reason plays in their own belief formation? You cannot, on the one hand, put forward a view that says great intelligence is easily over-ridden by psychological delusions and, on the other, claim that one unique group of people can see clearly what reason demands and free themselves from such grips. Either many religious people are not as irrational as they seem, or atheists are not entitled to assume they are as rational as they seem to themselves.

The blonde in me must be coming out, because I don't get it.
