I believe you have assumed correctly. One must believe in Christ, the Eternal God, to be a Christian.
What is the
heresy example that you encountered that said otherwise?

Some don't believe he is eternally the son and became the son after birth. For example John MacArthur use to believe this but has since changed views

MacArthur isn’t afraid of preaching heresy. He’s a Calvinist.

Rick is correct...
In order to put your faith in Jesus you must believe that Jesus is the Eternal God.
But...
The question of the 'eternal sonship' of Jesus is a different issue.
Here is an article that discusses the issue you are referring to
What is the doctrine of eternal Sonship and is it biblical?

Thanks DB.
It has really thrown me that some Christians think Jesus became a Son. So if that was true, in what way did he relate to the Father before being the Son etc
