Rick: I’m not addressing any of that until you explain John 3:16 in light of your belief that someone can lose eternal life.
Who is the eternal life? Jesus is.
Eternal life is still eternal whether or not you accept it.
Let's say someone says if you have faith you will get an eternal diamond [and for the sake of argument it is eternal]... you can forfeit that eternal diamond by saying you don't want it anymore, throw it away, and reject it.
Then someone could say, do you have that eternal diamond? And then you say that you rejected it.
Then they would say, well it must not ever been an eternal diamond, because if you rejected it then it must not have ever been eternal.
See how that argument makes no sense?
Our eternal life is found in Christ. He is the way, the truth, and the life.
None of us have eternal life outside of our union with Jesus.
Before you had a relationship with Jesus Christ, was he already eternal life, or was he not?
When you come to Christ, do you have eternal life? Yes! because you are in Christ, and he is the life!
If you reject Jesus Christ, and you're cut off from Christ, and you no longer have eternal life, is Jesus still the eternal life? Does eternal life cease to exist? No. You've just chosen not to participate in it.
1 John 5:11-12 - And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
If you come to Christ you have eternal life, if you reject him, you reject eternal life. Eternal life doesn't stop it continues it just doesn't continue for you. You refuse to participate in it, but it's still eternal.
Jesus compares us to branches on a tree. Jesus is the tree, and we are the branches. As branches we can either abide in the tree, or be cut off from the tree.
If we are not abiding or growing in Christ, we just want to hear empty promises, like the serpent says "You shall not die."
God doesn't give false promises, he gives promises with warnings.
John 15:1-6 - “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
This is a clear warning for those in Christ that you MUST abide in Christ, or you will wither and be thrown into the fire.
1 John 2:24-25 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.
2 John 9-11 Everyone who goes on ahead
and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.
Matthew 24:13 - He that endures to the end will be saved.
