I see it as merely the school's establishment re-enforcing their humanist / agnostic / atheistic culture. You'll never see a theologically conservative Christian put in such a leadership position.

In the army we get chaplains from different religions. Some religions can be atheistic, ie Buddhism, but otherwise it makes no sense.

Guess it depends upon what you think a chaplain is supposed to be - but more importantly, a chaplain in the armed forces - as opposed to on of an certain faith. Plus, I know that atheists can be compassionate and caring and some apparently desire to serve in such a capacity. One of my best friends, whom passed away three years ago, was an atheist and was the most gentle and kind guy you would ever hope to meet. He put most Christians to shame in the kind of person he was. I talked to him on his death bed - he listened but I don't know of the outcome. Hardest conversation I ever had in my life!

I always saw the role of chaplain as that of a councillor/social worker/good listener. No need to be a Christian for such a position.
