Amalekite Children

One of the diffcult things for me to read is the children and babies being killed. God is able to make anything happen. Wasn't there a way to save the children?
According to some, it was a gateway to heaven. Young children and the really handicapped automatically go to heaven because they don't really know better.
However, extremists could say why don't we kill kids now? Well, it's wrong and plus war has/had different rules. War is ugly all around.
