The speculation and assertions surrounding the existence of the devil are widespread amongst Christians, as well as a topic of much dismissive, cynical mocking and uninformed understandings within atheist communities. And for Christians, especially, Satan's existence is extremely troubling. We're told that Satan and his follower demons are destroyers of people and society, and that is their following, acceptance and embracing of his lies and schemes that make him what the Bible says is "the god of this world." It tells us that he is the great deceiver ultimately behind the horrific evil, wars, murders, thievery, etc. that ensnares people to doing his will, to the misery, and often horror, for themselves and and their fellow man. And yet, most are totally unaware of the devil's schemes or that this is happening to us all.
But the FAR bigger question for Christians is, why would our God, who has ALWAYS perfectly seen every detail of FUTURE events and actions, create and allow the power and anguish caused by Satan and his army demonic followers? Theologians and knowledgeable Christians have wrestled with this question for many centuries. And so, I thought it might be helpful to put together some good links that bring greater clarity to this troubling topic of Satan, his evil, and why God has not yet destroyed him. Because the Bible tells us not only of the great dangers of Satan's desires to ruin our lives, but it also reveals how we can recognize how and when he is operating. But most importantly, it tells us how we can successfully resist - and AVOID him - God did not leave us helpless to the Satan's power or devices.
A few things to note about the devil:
. God did NOT create Satan to be a devil - nor did He did cause his immense pride, rebellion, hate and evil. The Bible tells us that God originally created Satan to be a beautiful angelic being, who also resided in Heaven, along with the other angels that eventually followed him into rebellion against God. But God also gave Satan free will, he exercised it by initiating and leading a rebellion against God, whom he desired to replace with himself. The result was, Satan was banished to roam the earth. And yet, God always knew this would happen per His eternal plans to control and use it, to His glory and the eternal benefit to all Believers across time - as hard to understand as this might seem. God IS in control of ALL things!
. Satan's power is VERY small and NO match in comparison to the infinite power of God. And yet, the Bible warns us that his power is formidable to us, should never be underestimated, that it should be wisely respected, per his ability to tempt and lead mankind into many great evils and horrors. But God has GREATLY limited and controls what He allows the devil to do!
. By far, most of the ruin and horrors that Satan's power causes are carried out by HUMANS, as he uses them as his instrument of destruction - as he tempts, inspires, lies, tricks, and deceives people into doing his wicked bidding. The Bible says there are unseen, supernatural powers and entities constantly stirring up evil across our planet - a reality many in the modern, scientific world foolishly and naively scoff at.
. Satan has MANY powerful tools in his tool belt, to destroy us, by inspiring: The use of drugs, alcohol, ensnarement in materialism, gender confusion, all manner sexual sins, adulteries, debauchery, hatred, fear, jealousy, pride, envy, insecurities, belief in a wide array of false religions, gods, obsession with strange phenomena, and all manner of distractions to keep our attention away from God, etc. He is even the master at creating unbelief in his own existence. And within some cults, he does the reverse, inspiring worship of himself. The devil also is behind false teachers that sometimes even come from within the Church. As 2 Corinthians 11 tells us, Satan's deceptions are even capable of masquerading "as an angel of light" and that "it is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness." And for Christians, he is the clever "accuser," constantly wanting us to doubt our salvation and God's love, to have us laser-focused upon our own failures and sense of unworthiness before God - all things designed to make us distrust God!
. Satan is the leader of a group of fellow supernatural beings (fallen angels / demons!) that followed him into rebellion and hatred of God and mankind, who likewise roam the earth.
. Mankind, from birth, has a natural inclination to chase all manner of sin. We have inherited a sin nature - which means that, at some point, we all unavoidably begin to sin. And knowing our sinful inclinations, just like a fisherman knows which bait or lures are most likely to attract fish, Satan knows which precisely which personally tempting lures to use on each of us and how to maximize their effectiveness.
. God is both in control of Satan's abilities, and greatly limits them, and He also USES the schemes of devil for the good of those who have faith in Jesus! While God NEVER causes sin or temptation (James 1:13), He nonetheless can use evil intentions and actions to bring about good instead - something many of us find surprising. But as the Creator and Lord of ALL beings and things, God also has sovereign control over them - even when and where we can't see or doubt it.
. We are not to be obsessed with Satan or the demonic - nor to fear them. They do not have power over Believers who depend upon God to resist them. Many Christians are obsessed with what the devil or demons might be up to - and well beyond a healthy point of merely being cautious, constantly vigilant, and aware of their threat, and how to resist them. Our focus needs to be upon the Lord, upon Jesus - and not Satan or the demonic!
