"I desire mercy and not sacrifice."

Hello to all,
I am not sure what Jesus meant when He said:
It sounds like Jesus is abolishing animal sacrifices. It also suggests that Jesus' sacrifice on the cross was not what God wanted either.
Do any of you have any thoughts on this?
Thanks for the help.
I am not sure what Jesus meant when He said:
I know that Jesus is quoting this Scripture:Matthew 9:13, 13But go and learn what this means: "I desire mercy and not sacrifice.' For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."
I've read a few articles on the Internet, but haven't found what I'm after.Hosea 6:6For I desire mercy and not sacrifice, And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.
