Java and JavaScript are programming languages that run when your page is loaded or when your visitor does some action on your page. These effects include pull-down menus, rollovers (image changes as you move over specific links), alerts, forms, buttons, colors and background effects. Although these languages can be used to do useful things, they are often used to awe your visitors. Too many special effects on your page can be distracting and take a long time to load. In addition, some old browsers do not support all the effects or may even crash (a common problem for those using Netscape on a Macintosh). Use sparingly and make sure that your visitors have an alternate means of navigating your site.
