by Dana Chaffin

Lost & Found FamilyOn September 22, Mandie and the Secret Tunnel will be released on DVD. This is an exciting movie that keeps viewers wondering what will happen next. It has adventure, suspense, and comedy for the whole family to enjoy. It has been family approved by the Dove Foundation. The movie was based on the book of the same title, by Christian author, Lois Gladys Leppard.

Mandie and the Secret Tunnel is set in North Carolina in the early 1900s. The character of Mandie is a curious young girl with qualities of Laura Ingalls, Nancy Drew, and Cinderella, all in one. Mandie feels alone without 'real' family after her father passes away. She learns that even though she is not searching for God, because she is hurting, He is always there. Although Mandie asked many times, her father was very secretive about his family. But a Cherokee friend tells her of an uncle that she has never met, so they set off on a journey to find him. Once she locates her uncle’s home, she finds only more family secrets. She discovers that her uncle had recently traveled into a big storm and is presumed dead. Her uncle’s estate keeper, Jason Bond, informs her that the uncle’s will is missing and he needs her help to find it. And the secrets of her past start to unfold. It will keep you on the edge of your seat in anticipation The producers, Joy Chapman and Owen Smith, are not new to bringing books to life. They previously produced The Sugar Creek Gang Series of 5 DVDs based on books by author Paul Hutchens.

Lois Gladys Leppard is the Christian author of the Mandie Series books. Mandie and the Secret Tunnel is the first book in the series, which she wrote at just 11 years old. However, the book was not published until 1983, over 45 years later. The series has been very popular with over 6 million copies sold. The series consists of 40 books about Mandie and her adventures. Leppard used a Bible verse at the beginning of each book to set a theme. In Mandie and the Secret Tunnel the Bible verse used is, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…” Psalm 23:1. The Mandie books are based on Leppard’s life, growing up Cherokee in the South. She unfortunately did not see the completion of the movie, as she passed away October 5, 2008.
