The new atheism

God, Science, and ReasonGod, Science, and Reason is an appeal to reason from a Christian perspective. Michael Bunner shows how the new atheists fail to evaluate evidence with an unbiased approach, but assume the absence of the supernatural through scientific naturalism and philosophical materialism. The book is a good resource for Christian youth and their parents who are concerned that their sons or daughters might lose their faith when attending college. More...

Sociopaths & God

I received an email from Adam, an agnostic psychology undergraduate, who asked whether the existence of people who cannot tell right from wrong might provide an argument against the existence of God. Why would God create an individual who couldn't distinguish good from evil and then condemn him because of that condition? The syndrome that describes this disorder used to be called sociopathy, although it is now referred to as "antisocial personality disorder" (ASPD). People with this disorder are defined by the American Psychological Association as exhibiting "a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood." Are these people "born this way"? More...

Iniquities of the fathers

I got an email from a fellow molecular biologist/Christian who asked a question about the Bible verse in which God says He would visit, "the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and the fourth generations." The verse in question is actually part of the ten commandments, so it must be pretty important in God's eyes. However, doesn't it seem rather severe to punish innocent great grandchildren because their great grandfather committed some sin? Skeptics say that this verse shows that God is not fair. More...

Craters on the moon

There are many large craters on the moon, which can even be seen with an average pair of binoculars. Young earth creationists say most of those craters happened during the flood. Is this what the Bible and science say? What about the cratering event that destroyed the dinosaurs and 75% of all species on earth? The presence of craters is actually one of the easier to understand arguments against young earth creation "science" and one of the most powerful refutations of young earth Bible interpretation. Adam with Eve?

I received an email from Claretta who thought that my teaching regarding Satan was in error when I said, "We don't know where Adam was at the time of Satan's temptation". What had seemed obvious to me—that Adam was AWOL at the time Satan approached her—wasn't convincing to Claretta. She pointed out that Genesis 3:6 says, "...she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it" (emphasis added). If one only reads that part of the story, it would seem like an open and shut case that Adam was with her the whole time. However...

Called vs. chosen

A fellow believer wrote me asking why few are chosen (for salvation/heaven) when many are called. When people are called by God, we usually expect them to respond to the call and begin the process leading to salvation. The puzzling phrase, "For many are called, but few are chosen" comes in the conclusion of Jesus' parable of the wedding feast. What was Jesus referring to when he made this statement? More...
